Chairs Turkcell mobile phone company, which is the only Turkish ADR to trade on the NYSE. His Aksam media group this winter fueled the ire of Turkish prime minister Recep Erdogan with a story on the increase of pollution resulting from free coal distribution. But the British-schooled entrepreneur has endured trials before: in the past few years repaid more than $3 billion of debt accumulated at 2 of his banks, Pamukbank and Yapi Kredi.

Founder of Turkey's largest construction company, Enka. Company now run by son, Mehmet Sinan Tara, who dropped out of the billionaires ranks this year as its share price plummeted more than 60%. One billion worth of contracts in Russia may dry up as real estate market there fizzles. Born in Macedonia, he established Enka at age 27 in Istanbul with brother-in-law Sadi Gulcelik.

Chairman of 25-year-old Agaoglu Group, a builder of hotels, resorts, and ski lodges in Turkey. Net worth up this year because of greater asset transparency; owns 90 million square feet of developable land on western coast of Turkey and continues to buy up parcels opportunistically. Despite the downturn, his new Istanbul residential estate project called My City Bahcelievler sold 300 units in 3 days in mid-February. Alijan Ibragimov

With partners and longtime friends Alexander Machkevich and Patokh Chodiev (both billionaires) built a metals and mining empire in Kazakhstan; stock of London-listed Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation down 54% over the past year. In December 2007 raised stake to 30.5% in its major holding, Garanti Bank, in part with a $580 million loan; the bank's stock has fallen almost 50% over the past year. Bakhytbek Baiseitov

Cut deal to sell up to half of his CenterCredit bank to South Korea's biggest bank Kookmin Bank (now KB Financial Group) in April before banking crisis hit Kazakhstan. First part of the deal closed October 2008: he got $624 million for a 30.5% of the bank. Kazakh native founded CenterCredit in 1988 through a loophole in Soviet law that allowed private banks; turned it into the sixth-largest bank in Kazakhstan, but one without exposure to risky international lending bringing down banks of former Kazakh billionaires. Textile entrepreneur owns Gap Textile, one of the world's top 10 denim producers, which sells products to Diesel, Levi Strauss, Armani, Gap and other Western brands. Last April made big media push with $1.1 billion purchase of Turkey's second-largest media company, Sabah and ATV. His company publishes Forbes Turkey, under license from Forbes Media LLC. Plans to expand energy and telecommunications businesses may be constrained by tightening markets.

Tuncay Ozilhan

Brewmaster of Turkey created one of the country's most popular brands, Efes Pilsen beer. Controls Anadolu Group conglomerate with fellow billionaire Kamil Yazici. Beer and soft drink growth slowing; brewer Anadolu Efes stock down by a quarter over the past year. Group also holds 50% stake in Coca-Cola Turkey. Auto sales hit as well: makes Isuzus in Turkish plants and imports Lada and Kia cars made in Russia and Korea, which are then distributed in Ukraine and central Asian countries. Low-key fashionista sister of billionaire Ferit Sahenk and heir to Dogus Holding fortune built by father, Ayhan. Has handled retail partnerships with luxury brands Tods and Armani; once hot lux sector now slowing. Has helped open thousands of summer sports camps throughout Turkey to generate interest in basketball.

интресно, вот этот озегин основал университет,и у других в турецкой элиты имеются универститеты, те же коч и сабанджы .. вот глазунов основал академию искусств, в которой абсолютно бесплатно учатся самые одаренные студенты..в астану хотят притащить какие то университеты, чтобы у них здесь были кампусы..типа как в некоторых странах персидского залива..не знаю что из этого получится..вообще будут ли у нас хорошие унивреситеты через 10-20 лет...но пока у кого есть возможность, пытаются затолкать своих чад на запад или на восток.. лишь бы куда нить но не тут..
