Toğrul Tower

Comment This!

The 20 m tall brick tower is the tomb of Seljuk ruler Toğrul who died in Ray in 1063 September 4. Originally it was capped by a conical dome which collapsed during an earthquake. The tower itself is in fact a solar clock: its external surface is divided into 24 facets (representing 24 hours) and on upper part of each facet there are 4 semi-circles each representing a quarter of an hour. A little more upward there are 6 rectangles each representing 10 minutes and there are also very small grooves on them showing the seconds. Any new position of sun will change the shadows of these forms revealing the exact time.
