HOW WE MET: Irek Mukhamedov & Altynai Asylmuratova

Irek Mukhamedov was born in Kazan, Russia, in 1960. He was the Bolshoi's leading male dancer for nine years. In 1990 he defected to London where he joined the Royal Ballet. In 1992 he formed his own company, Irek Mukhamedov & Company. He and his family live in Bedfordshire.
Altynai Asylmuratova was born in Almaty in 1961. She studied at the Vaganova Ballet Academy, and, in 1982, became the principal dancer with the Bolshoi's great rival, the Kirov. She lives with her husband and their daughter in St Petersburg where she is now director of the Vaganova Ballet Academy.
